See our events page for details.
Please review time commitments and physical requirements to participate. Space is limited.
SANCTUARY is a guardianship program for our permanent resident donkeys who are in need of care. Others are just in need of a safe haven. YOU can be the one to give a homeless donkey the food, water, shelter, medical treatment, hoof care, and training it needs. Your sponsorship would helps us provide sanctuary donkeys a home for life. Most of our sanctuary donkeys have medical or special needs and still need to receive hoof care, dental care, and medical care. If you cannot care for your animal or feel that you wish to make plans for them to live with us in the future please contact us to discuss making preparations in your will. Many people pass without making arrangements for their animals. As many of our donkeys will out live us we created this Sanctuary for this purpose
Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of rescued donkeys?
Do you wish to become a volunteer or and help share the wonder of these humble creatures with the world? We are currently seeking committed volunteers who can make a weekly minimum commitment of three months, with one shift per week lasting approximately three hours. This training is for volunteers who can begin prior to April 1 2024.
Me Me Me Me Me !!!!!!!
Our critters have a laundry list of things they need and thats always an excellent way to make a contribution !
These are some items we can always use around the shelter. Occasionally we also have special projects that require other supplies. If you have something in mind that is not on this list, just give us a call to see if it is something we can use
As our 501(c)(3) designation has recently been issued, Purple Donkey Human Rescue is gearing up for lots of programming in 2024. We will begin with a volunteer training on February 10th
Will be held as an all day seminar with lunch and prizes offered by our sponsors including
Cypress Farm Registered Miniature Donkeys.
Our trainer and Farrier Bobby Howell will give a class on Hoof Care and
Natural Horsemanship
We look forward to hosting new volunteers who will help support our animals and our vision in 2024
Alice is the oldest and most serene of our rescues. She came to us pregnant. She is the Mother of the spicy red Billy Jack. Because she was allowed to graze without supervision the ligament in her neck became strained and broke years ago due to becoming over weight. She had laminitis when she arrived but has made a strong recovery. We monitor their calories carefully.
Baby came to us when she was 6 months old. She was the most approachable donkey in the group because of her age. She loved to take walks in the woods. She liked to lead the way. She would heal like a dog especially if she knew you had treats. We didn't know it then but we do not hand feed treats anymore so as to discourage aggressive nibbling. We toss their treats (roasted salted peanuts) on the ground instead. We do not feed donkeys sweets as their caloric requirements are minimal and although highly desired is not the best for donkeys.
Billy Jack was our last rescue baby born on the farm when his Mother along with several others arrived to the farm pregnant. Alice was a wonderful Mother and he has grown to be a spicy character. He can be seen many days at Charity's side or wrestling with one of the other geldings. Jacks can play pretty rough. It's not uncommon to be putting ointment on naked patches on faces and necks.. Boys will be boys when it comes to donkeys. Even geldings.
Lovey is a complete sweetheart and attached at the hip to Eden and her daughter Charity. She must have some distant Poitou in her background. She has a straight mane and a curly long except in the heat of summer. She has suffered constantly from white line disease which takes constant care and supervision. She is also being examined for a growth she has had and now demands biopsy. Wish her luck.
Feisty confident Charity is Lovey's daughter. She came to us as a baby with Lovey and Eden from a good home in Georgia. Due to health issues they could no longer stay in that loving home. This happens all too often. Make sure you have a will that includes money for the care of your animals. Please contact us if you wish to make arrangements for your animal's care in the future.
Eden is a very special girl. She is the mother of healthy TWINS . They do not reside here but at another sanctuary. Luckily they were all owned by a lovely woman who cared for them but had to surrender them due to health issues
Maybelle is Cole's Mom. They Came to us when Cole was only a week old. When we began donkey walks years ago Maybelle would ofter stop in her tracks for 30 minutes until she felt ready to proceed. Donkeys must feel great trust in order to be given direction. Maybelle is one of the inspirations for the purple donkey name Her beautiful deep silver gray coat reflects the sun in the early evening or morning giving her the appearance of being a Purple Donkey
Cole arrived on the farm at a week old. He was jet black but now is the most beautiful auburn. He is a smart careful guy who like all donkeys has an incredible curiosity. If any work is going on in the vicinity he and his gelding buddies Flint and Billy Jack are off to get a close up look. They are our resident building inspectors.
Edith is a smart and splashy lady. She also came to us pregnant with little Flint. She has spent a lot of time with our trainer as she was very suspicious when she arrived. Now she is an easy going girl and often spends time with other donkeys who need to have a comforting personality nearby
A picture says 1000 words
Little Flint is one smart cookie. He is smart, brave and soooo curious even by donkey standards. If a donkey is in the office, in the golf cart or somewhere else a donkey isn't supposed to be, chances are it's this little Houdini.
He's the smallest of our rescues just over 36" at the withers, which makes him a little taller than a miniature donkey (30-36" ) but he's our smallest standard donkey so far.
Purple Donkey Human Rescue is a 501(c)(3) supported by
Cypress Farm Registered Miniature Donkeys
The Cypress Farm Miniatures are well bred pedigree MDR Registered donkeys who receive the best of care. They are the lucky ones. They are carefully bred to be straight and strong and healthy for generations. These are the donkeys who will carry the breed standard into the future. But just because they have pedigrees doesn't mean they can't be of service. These trained miniatures support our rescue by participating in the Purple Donkey Equine Therapy programs. Who better to work with children or others who need an approachable ally to help guide them on the their road to recovery? Donkeys are physically three times stronger than horses. For these little guys it's so true in so many ways ! Meet our

Some rescues are pedigreed animals
Last summer we received a call from another breeder who had taken ill and needed some of her very valuable animals to go to other homes fast. It was 98 degrees and time was of the essence. It could happen to anyone and it happens all the time. Someone animals rely on to care for them, clean their areas and feed them, is suddenly struck ill.

You've come a long way Baby
This young jennet rescue, Baby , was plagued with white line when she first arrived at six months old. At one point most of her hoof wall was removed to get oxygen to her foot and treat it. Her feet still require constant attention but she is now coming into adulthood with sound feet.
